Introduction to the 2014 Edition

Denmark hosted Eurovision this year with the organisers staging the 59th Contest in the B&W Hallerne, in Copenhagen. Broadcaster DR chose three presenters to host the semi-finals and final, Lise Rønne, Nikolaj Koppel and Pilou Asbæk . This was Denmark’s and Copenhagen’s third hosting of the Contest, following Contests in 1964 and 2001.

The Contest saw 37 countries taking part, two fewer than in 2013. Poland and Portugal returned but Cyprus, Serbia, Croatia and Bulgaria all dropped out, mostly due to funding reasons although Croatia also blamed a poor run of results in recent years. The Cypriot broadcaster stated that their absence in 2014 may continue indefinitely. Valentina Monetta was San Marino’s representative for the third successive year, becoming the fourth performer to do so in the history of Eurovision. Romania’s Paula Seling and Ovi returned after their relative success in 2010. The winners of Junior Eurovision in 2006, Russia’s Tolmachevy Sisters made history by participating in the main Contest this year. Of the 37 entries, 32 were sung wholly or predominantly in English, a complete turnaround following 2013 which had seen a resurgence in the use of native languages.

Congratulations to Conchita Wurst and to Austria who won Eurovision for the first time since 1966. Netherlands were runners-up but have the honour of being awarded the highest number of 12 points in a semi-final without going on to win the final. And a special mention for both Montenegro and San Marino who both made it through to the Grand Final for the first time. Every currently regularly participating country has now reached the final at least once.

It was another abject performance this year for most of the the Big 5, with Spain excepted. The UK, France, Germany and Italy averaged 28 points each this year, higher than last year but meaning they all finished in the bottom ten, with France ending with a woeful two points. After nine consecutive years that the winner has come from the second half of the running order, Conchita won after performing 11th. There was a change this year compared to recent contests, with five of the top eight entries performing in the first half.

The 2014 Edition of the Complete & Independent Guide is the 7th edition of the book. It contains every detail of every Contest since 1956. We have expanded the Guide this year to include extra facts, statistics and records, including a section on the winning margins since 1975 and also a complete round-by-round scoreboard analysis so the movements of your favourites can be followed as the votes were announced.
