Introduction to the 2013 Revised Second Edition
Welcome to the revised second edition of our Eurovision guide for 2013! We’ve taken the opportunity to update the first edition of the 2013 guide and to try to incorporate as many of the statistics and analysis that we have developed in later editions. The 2013 Contest saw 39 competing nations, three fewer than in 2012. We welcomed back Armenia after they felt unable to participate in the 2012 Contest held in Azerbaijan because of security concerns but lost Bosnia, Portugal, Slovakia and Turkey. Both Bosnia and Portugal cited financial reasons for not participating, Slovakia’s broadcaster said they were prioritising other projects, while Turkey expressed continued discontent with the use of the 50/50 jury/televote and the automatic qualification for the Final of the “Big 5” countries. Malmö in Sweden hosted the Contest with the organisers choosing to stage the event in the 15,000 capacity Malmö Arena and the sole presenter was Petra Mede.
Several former entrants returned to the Contest this year. San Marino’s Valentina Monetta represented her country for the second year running. Elitsa Todorova and Stoyan Yankoulov returned for Bulgaria, having taken part in the 2007 Contest. Nevena Božović of Moje 3 represented Serbia and became the first performer to have entered both the Junior Eurovision and senior Contests. The artists for Albania, Moldova and Armenia returned after having performed as backing vocals in earlier Contests for their respective countries. Azerbaijan were accused of attempting to give financial inducements to residents of at least 16 countries so that multiple televotes could be made for Azerbaijan’s entries. While no action was taken at the time, it was subsequently confirmed by the Eurovision Reference Group that Azerbaijan had cheated.
It was another mixed performance by the Big 5 this year, Italy finished 7th but Spain, United Kingdom, France and Germany all finished in the bottom 8. So congratulations to Denmark, winners for the third time and first victory since 2000 with Emmelie de Forest singing Teardrops. This second edition of the 2013 Complete & Independent Guide contains many extra pages of statistics compared to the first edition. Remember to check out our website for discounted prices compared to Amazon and other online stores! Buying from our website or our eBay store really helps keep our books going. All editions of the Guide are available on the website.
