Introduction to the 2012 Edition

Welcome to the revised second edition of our Eurovision guide for 2012! We’ve taken the opportunity to update the first edition of the 2012 guide and to try to incorporate as many of the statistics and analysis that we have developed in later editions.

The 2012 Contest saw 42 competing nations this year, one fewer than in 2011. We welcomed back Montenegro (previous appearance: 2009), but lost Poland for financial reasons and Armenia which did not feel able to participate in a Contest held in Azerbaijan because of security concerns.

Azerbaijan’s capital Baku hosted the Contest with the organisers choosing to stage the event in the 16,000 capacity Crystal Hall and the presenters were Leyla Aliyeva, Eldar Gasimov and Nargiz Birk-Petersen.

Several former entrants returned to the Contest in 2012, twins Jedward performed for Ireland for the second consecutive year. Jónsi for Iceland and Željko Joksimović for Serbia both previously participated in 2004. Macedonia’s Kaliopi had also taken part in the 1996 qualifying round.

It was another mixed performance by the Big 5 this year, Italy, Spain and Germany finished in the top 10 but France and the UK were left in the bottom five.

So congratulations to Sweden, winners for the fifth time with Loreen singing “Euphoria”. Loreen would go on to win Eurovision for a second time in 2023.

This second edition of the 2012 Complete & Independent Guide contains many extra pages of statistics compared to the first edition. Remember to check out our website for discounted prices compared to Amazon and other online stores! Buying from our website or our eBay store really helps keep our books going. All editions of the Guide are available on the website.
