Introduction to the 2010 Edition

Welcome to the revised second edition of our Eurovision guide for 2010! We’ve taken the opportunity to update the first edition of the 2010 guide and to try to incorporate as many of the statistics and analysis that we have developed in later editions. Looking back on the 2010 Contest after eleven years, the biggest change was the expansion of 50%/50% jury and public voting to both semi-finals, following the reintroduction of juries for the 2009 Final.

The 2010 Contest saw 39 competing nations this year, three fewer than in 2009, Georgia returned after withdrawing last year, but Andorra, Hungary, Montenegro and the Czech Republic all declined to take part this year, mostly for financial reasons.

Norway hosted Eurovision 2010 with the organisers staging the 55th Contest in Oslo’s Telenor Arena. Broadcaster NRK chose Erik Solbakken, Haddy Jatou N'jie, and Nadia Hasnaoui to host the Final show. It was the third time Norway had hosted the contest and the first time since 1996.

Congratulations to the winners Germany who won Eurovision for the second time, their first since reunification. Lena Meyer-Landrut won with “Satellite”, finishing 67 points ahead of runners up Turkey. Sweden failed to qualify for the final for the first time since semi-finals were introduced and it was the first time Sweden did not take part in the final show since 1976. The historically poor performance of the “Big 4” improved considerably with Germany’s win, but the United Kingdom made up for it by putting in another dismal effort and finishing last.
