Introduction to the 2009 Edition

Welcome to the revised second edition of our Eurovision guide for 2009! We’ve taken the opportunity to update the first edition of the 2009 guide and to try to incorporate as many of the statistics and analysis that we have developed in later editions.

Looking back on the 2009 Contest after eleven years, the most interesting change was the introduction of separate jury and public voting for the Final, as a response to criticism that there was too much neighbourly and diaspora voting taking place.

The 2009 Contest saw 42 competing nations this year, one fewer than in 2008, Slovakia returned after last participating in 1998, but San Marino withdrew after just one year for financial reasons and Georgia refused to take part after their original song was deemed to include political lyrics and banned.

Russia hosted Eurovision this year with the organisers staging the 54th Contest in Moscow’s Olympic Arena. Broadcaster C1R chose Ivan Urgant and Alsou Abramova to host the Final show. It was the first time Russia had hosted the contest.

Congratulations to the winner Alexander Rybak and to Norway who won Eurovision for the third time. Rybak’s song “Fairytale” was a phenomenal success, breaking the all-time points record and gaining 387 points from a possible 492.

The “Big 5” continue to achieve poor results, with the notable exception of the United Kingdom, for whom Jade Ewen sang her way to fifth place, the UK’s best finish since 2002. Spain and Germany however, both finished in the bottom six.
