Introduction to the 2008 Edition

Welcome to the revised second edition of our Eurovision guide for 2008! The first edition has been out of print for a while and we’ve taken the opportunity to update the guide and to try to incorporate as many of the statistics and analysis that we have developed in later editions.

Looking back on the 2008 Contest after ten years, the most significant change has been to the availability of information on both the voting and the national qualification competitions. There is no split between the jury and public voting for example and often no details on how the winners of national selection competitions were decided.

The 2008 Contest was notable for being the first to comprise two semi-finals, and with 43 competing nations this year saw the largest number of entrants up to that point. 2008 also saw the debuts of San Marino and Azerbaijan. San Marino failed to impress the voters but Azerbaijan qualified for the final and finished a creditable eighth. There were no returning countries this year and we lost Austria who withdrew over uncertainty over how countries would be allocated to each semi-final, although lack of interest in Austria after a series of poor results was also believed to be a factor.

Serbia hosted Eurovision this year with the organisers staging the 53rd Contest in Belgrade’s 25,000 capacity Belgrade Arena. Broadcaster RTS chose Jovana Jankovic and Željko Joksimovic to present the shows. It was the first time Serbia had hosted the contest, when the former Yugoslavia hosted the 1990 contest, the final was held in what became Croatia.

Congratulations to Dima Bilan and to Russia who won Eurovision for the first time after 12 years of trying with “Believe”. Dima had finished second for Russia just two years earlier. The “Big 5” continue to achieve poor results, with a combined 130 points, the same as in 2007. The United Kingdom finished last and they and third-last Germany finishing with just 28 points between them. Spain finished the highest of the automatic qualifiers but still managed only a mediocre 16th place.

This second edition of the 2008 Complete & Independent Guide contains many extra pages of statistics compared to the first edition, and for the first time we have included a fuller analysis of regional bloc voting to see if neighbourly voting really does affect the results.
