Introduction to the 2021 Edition

What a relief! The Eurovision Song Contest returned after being cancelled in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and it was wonderful to see it back and in front of fans.

The Netherlands were due to host the 65th Contest in 2020 following Duncan Laurence’s win with “Arcade” and so it was staged this year in Rotterdam’s Ahoy Arena with 3500 fans attending, still limited due to social distancing but a welcome sight nonetheless and the fans generated plenty of noise! It was the Netherlands’ 5th time hosting the event, the last being in 1980. Sadly Duncan was unable to take part in the show on the night, having tested positive for Covid-19, as did a band member from Iceland’s entry which prevented the group from performing live. Despite having to rely on a rehearsal video, Iceland finished an impressive 4th in the Final.

Thirty-nine countries participated, two fewer than in 2019, Bulgaria and Ukraine returned but we lost Hungary, Montenegro, Armenia and Belarus. Armenia withdrew because of continuing unrest following the 2020 war with Azerbaijan and Belarus’s original song was deemed to be too political, supporting the government’s stance over the recent protests in Belarus and even a second attempt breached the rules, so Belarus was disqualified. It wouldn't be Eurovision without a bizarre qualification drama.

Congratulations to rock group MÃ¥neskin and to Italy who won Eurovision for the first time since 1990 with “Zitti e buoni”, although it was absent from the contest from 1998 until 2010. This was Italy’s third win overall. It goes to show there’s no predicting what type of song will win.

The “Big 5”’s performance was completely polarised this year. On one hand we had Italy and France finishing in the top two places but Spain, Germany and the United Kingdom finished in the bottom three. None of the bottom three received a single point from the public and nor did hosts Netherlands who finished fourth last. The United Kingdom managed to receive no points from either juries or the public, a feat which was expected to be almost impossible, but at least it was entertainingly awful!

The 2021 Edition of the Complete & Independent Guide is the 13th edition of the book and as usual it’s packed with details of every Contest since 1956 along with plenty of analysis, in 332 pages. We’ve included a section on the cancelled 2020 contest as well, the qualification process and details of all the songs selected for that show but not used.

A few changes this year, the complete voting history now shows just the points awarded by each country and the individual scoreboards for the jury and public voting will now only be included for the current year. The book is expanding by at least 12 pages every year and with these changes we can continue to keep the price at a low level.

Over the last couple of years we have also taken the opportunity to revise our early editions and now we have available second editions of the Guides for 2008, 2009 and 2010, all in gorgeous hardcover as well as paperback. We have been able to include in these updated editions a lot of the analysis we’ve developed in recent years.
