Introduction to the 2018 Edition

After the runaway success in 2017 of Portugal’s Salvador Sobral, Lisbon hosted Eurovision this year with the organisers staging the 63rd Contest in the city’s 20,000 seater Altice Arena, and watched by an estimated 186 million television viewers. Broadcaster RTP chose four female presenters to present the two semi-finals and final, Filomena Cautela, Sílvia Alberto, Daniela Ruah and Catarina Furtado. It was the first time Portugal had hosted the contest.

Forty-three countries participated, one more than last year and equalling the record number of participants set in 2008 and 2011. We welcomed back Russia after a one-year absence.

Congratulations to Netta Barzilai and to Israel who won Eurovision for the first time since 1998. This was Israel’s fourth win overall. Cyprus and Czech Republic achieved their best finishes, second and sixth respectively, with Czech Republic’s result being especially notable given how many years they have taken part without reaching the final. Azerbaijan, Romania and Russia lost their 100% record of qualifying for every final.

The “Big 5” continue to achieve mixed results, with Germany and Italy finishing fourth and fifth but perennial under-performers Spain and United Kingdom once again languishing in the bottom five. Hosts Portugal couldn’t repeat last year’s success, spectacularly so, ending up last.

Some interesting facts this year include Norway being by far the worst winner of a semi-final, finishing 15th in the final. 2018 also saw the biggest disparity yet between jury and public voting, Sweden received maximum points from eight countries’ juries but the public of seven of those countries failed to give them a single point. Montenegro’s jurors decided not to award a single point to any of the countries that finished in the top four.
